CGM’s – How much does it cost?

There are two types of cost associated with CGM.

Initial cost
The main initial cost is the CGM hardware such as the receiver and transmitter. The cost varies according to which system you buy. The hardware for Dexcom 7 + and the Abbott Freestyle Navigator cost around £1000. The Medtronic Real-time Guardian costs £2400 including 4 sensors. If you have a newer Medtronic pump you may find CGMS is already integrated or may be available if you pay a supplement (around £200).

Running costs
The main ongoing cost is the disposable sensors. These costs vary according to which system you use. Sensors range in price from £37 (Medtronic) to £60 (Dexcom 7+) each. It is worth bearing in mind that some company’s sensors last longer than others. Until recently Medtronic sensors were only recommended for 3 days use. They have now brought out a sensor that will last six days. The Freestyle Navigator last up to 5 days. Dexcom 7+ are licensed for 7 days use. These are the recommended usage times – however many users find they can wear their sensors for much longer. In some cases you also need adhesive covers to keep the sensors in place or protect them from water.

Currently there is no requirement for the NHS to fund CGM. There are no official figures on the number of patients being funded by the NHS to receive CGM, but INPUT believes the numbers are currently extremely low, probably less than 100.
